A Random Bit of Hardware knowledge – Compaq Presario m2000

1 11 2006

I happened to notice that someone found my blog yesterday by searching on google for “is the presario m2000 bluetooth capable”. I’ve mentioned my previous laptop’s model before, as well as bluetooth in a separate post (nothing to do with the compaq). Since I happen to know the answer, and it’s difficult to find online or through HP, I will state it right here for the sake of consumer knowledge:

The Compaq Presario M2000 is not capable of having any internal antennas for the purposes of an internal Wi-fi or Bluetooth card. Some laptop models may come with the internal antenna, and depending upon whether you order it, the internal Wi-fi card as well. They sometimes put in that antenna even if you don’t order the card. I had this hope for the M2000, however my hopes were sadly crushed. It does not come with an internal antenna, and it would be exceedingly difficult to install one yourself. Those who are ambitious are welcome to try, but I’d suggest just buying a newer bargain-bin laptop, since it seems every single laptop over $450 comes with internal Wi-fi these days. To my knowledge, bluetooth uses the same antenna as the Wi-fi, so it is simply a matter of getting a combo mini-PCI card that does Wi-fi and Bluetooth (assuming you want both at once) if you already have the antenna inside your laptop.

If you want bluetooth on the Presario M2000, you’ll have to resort to a Bluetooth PCMCIA card (do these exist? I’ve never seen one) or USB dongle. These will never get the same range as an internal antenna, and taking up the PC slot / a USB port on the M2000 is a big deal since it only has 2 USB ports and 1 PC slot. So, el-cheapo laptop buyers beware: you won’t get much wireless capability with this Presario model.

i don’t know why my comment above was cut off. my question was.. do you know if the M2000 will accept 100gb drives? or only drives less than 80gb? thanks!

While I can’t say that I know definitively whether or not it would accept an 80GB vs. a 100GB drive, I can’t imagine why not. Typically the only thing that has a definite maximum capacity that is also user-upgradeable is the RAM – currently, most laptops are limited to a maximum of 4GB, though you’d be hard-pressed to find the very expensive 2GB sticks required to get up to that. There isn’t generally an upper limit on what a laptop or computer can handle in terms of HDD space.

In any case, it is probably more important that you make sure you get the right size drive. Laptops use 2.5″ drives, as opposed to a standard desktop or external USB HDD that uses a 3.5″. Also, it is a good idea to make sure you get one that is 5400 RPM, and with 4 to 8MB of cache. Seriously consider getting a brand-name one that has a warranty on it. I recommend Seagate – their HDDs are high quality, and they have a standard 5 year manufacturer’s warranty that covers defects on all their internal HDDs (see this page: http://www.seagate.com/support/service/warranty.html).

hi! thanks for replying. I’ve already ordered an 80gb Seagate drive. =)

i currently have a two year old 40gb 2.5″ Western Digital one (not for the laptop though– it’s got a case and i use it as a portable drive)– it’s pretty good too. but like you said, Seagate’s warranty is longer that’s why I went with them this time.

Just thought I’d mention don’t get a 5400 RPM HDD it won’t detect.
You need the 4200rpm drive.

STevo, could you be more specific as to why it “won’t detect” a 5400 RPM HDD? To my knowledge, that’s the speed of the drive that comes in it in the first place. Did you have a problem with a replacement drive? If so, what brand is it and where did you buy it from? If you can’t provide such information, I will be removing your comment as it is too dubious to stand as useful and likely accurate information on its own.

Slightly confused my presario M2000 has built in wi-fi (tho no blue tooth)and 3 USB 2.0 ports. It also has 60GB HD oem. Glork (12th Dec 06) says max RAM 4GB. Manufacturer reports max 1GB ram but Intel website says the chipset (i855GM) supports 2GB- what is the upper limit? The desktop I’m at now has a manual reporting max 256MB ram but the chipset is said to handle 512MB- which has been runnimg very well past 6 months. Want to know so dont waste money on a 1GB ram module ( know takes ddr pc2700 200 pin SODIMM)

Hi Glork,

What is the highest possible processor upgrade for my compaq presario m2000 with presently a celeron m cpu?

Will it accept an intel centrino? or a pentium m? Will processor speed be also a factor?

Thank you very much!

To Ash:

I stated that generally laptops’ chipsets support 4GB of RAM max, though typically nobody buys more than 2GB. I can’t say that I know what the upper limit is for the Compaq m2000, since I haven’t done the research nor do I have the time. If you happen to find this somewhere in an official spec, I will gladly post the link/information.

To ET:

I bought mine from BestBuy on sale for about $550 about 1.5 years ago – it was a fixed configuration. As with Ash, I really have no idea what the options are for this machine. All I do know is that it is impossible to have an internal WiFi/Bluetooth antenna in the machine.

Sorry guys that I can’t provide you with this detailed information, but I’m really not an expert on all things Compaq m2000, and in fact I am more concerned at this point with knowing my current machine very well – the Tecra M7 (a big upgrade from the m2000!).

Max Memory for the M2000 is 1 gig. I’ve checked on several different websites. They all recommend that to utilize the memory you should have two 512MB of ram in each slot.

I meant 512mb in each slot

Even more confused that the other guy . . . My compaq presario m2000 has an internal Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN device . . .that’s the wifi device right? i’m in spitting range of 2 access points but why can’t i detect any signals with it? when i use the Windows Zero Configuration nothing happens . . . or is there a separate software utility for the device that i should be aware of ?

thanks in advance!

M2000 User:

You may have bought a configuration of the M2000 that has internal Wi-Fi, though I can’t be sure since I don’t have physical access to it. One way to check if you have internal WiFi is to see if you actually have the card inside (see this link at HP’s site for how to check on the mini-PCI card it may have.

If you do have the mini-PCI card in there, I would recommend getting NetStumbler ( http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ ) to see if your card is actually getting any signal. There are one of two possibilities that will happen when you open up NetStumber: 1) It will not detect your mini-PCI card, in which case you probably need to install drivers for it. Dig up the set of CDs that came with your M2000. 2) It does detect the device, but doesn’t get any signal from an access point, in which case your antenna just sucks. Can’t help ya there.

That’s about all the advice I can think of. Good luck!

i would like to protest the issue of the wireless and blue tooth… i own, and am currently typing on a hp special edition L2000, with has an identical mobo, case etc as the compaq m2000, the l2000 comes with blue tooth and wifi. the m2000 is missing the blue tooth hardware but is capable of receiving the upgrade, its a small (about the size of a quarter) device witch is located to the right of the cd/dvd drive. as far as the wifi goes, if the laptop is equipped with the antennas then all you have to do is go out and but a mini pci wifi card, other wise ya just have to install the antenna

can or not, upgrade compaq presario m2000 to 256mb (ddr333) + 1gb (ddr400) = 1256MB (RAM) and 120gb (HD) because i want to install Windows vista.
